The first week of spring brought some beautiful weather to Orcas island. Salmonberry’s early childhood class celebrated with a playful visit to the fairy realm…
After reading Fairy Houses by Tracy Kane on Monday, the children were ready to dive in. It was a joy to see how engaged the children were with fairy house building. They devoted much of their outside time throughout the week to constructing and adding to their fairy houses in the school’s back yard. They used branches from previous prunings, grasses, moss, stones, bark, and dandelions. Some of the elementary children got involved, either assisting with the younger children’s creations or creating their own miniature abodes.
Mid-week one child looked out of the classroom window and said, “Hey, a robin just went inside my fairy house!” It was almost as special as a visit by a real fairy. On Thursday they all created indoor versions of a fairy house, using playdough to hold together a variety of natural materials.

We were able to capture some of the spirit of the outdoor creations in these photos.
