Salmonberry summer programs are here!
Here is our much awaited list of summer offerings for this year. We have a range of programs for children ages 3 to 11. We will be listing a few more programs in July and August in the next couple of weeks, so check back for more information on those.
Enrolling in summer programs is easy! Email us at summerprogram@salmonberryschool.org with the information on which programs your child or children are interested in attending. Click on the link below for the registration form. Print out the form, fill it in, and mail it with your check to the address at the bottom of the form. Once we have received it, you will get a confirmation email. A week or two before the program, you will receive a welcome email from the program teacher with more specifics on the program your child is attending. Beginning Traditional Woodworking Ages 6-10
Teacher: Paul Freedman
July 2-6; 9:00-3:00 *Enrollment is limited* $ 250 + $25 materials THIS WEEK IS FULL! (See Traditional Woodworking week 2 below)
Learn 18th century woodworking skills and techniques as we craft useful implements, tools and furniture from local green wood. We will use froes, hatchets, drawknives and even a foot-operated “spring pole lathe.” Students will make treenware, rakes, stools, and possibly more advanced projects (chairs, shaving horses or even your own lathe) depending on skill level.
Music and Storytelling Ages 8-11

July 9-13; 9:00-3:00 $ 200
This class will focus on two areas of the performing arts, music and storytelling. With hand drums, ukuleles, and voices, we’ll explore the four elements of music: melody, harmony, rhythm, and dynamics. Simple musical notation will be introduced. We will sing and play lots of fun easy-to-learn songs. In the storytelling part of the class we’ll learn folk tales, in addition to creating stories from our own experiences.
Chickens 101 Ages 7-11

Students will explore the wacky world of chicken husbandry. Activities will include hatching eggs, learning about care and feeding and celebrating the wonder of the chicken through activities and literature.
Sheep and Fiber 101 Ages 7-11

July 23-27; 9:00-3:00 $200
Students will get to know all about sheep, lambs and many aspects of the processing of wool fiber into art. We will spend the week with some real sheep and lambs, try our hand at shearing, carding, spinning and several types of wool craft, from felting to knitting.
Low Tide Explorations Ages 3-6

Explore the wonders of the intertidal community through field trips and guided observations. The hands-on learning will be reinforced through stories and art.
Expressive Arts Summer Camp Ages 7-10

Music and Instrument-making Ages 3-6

Celebrate the wonder of music and make a range of simple and beautiful musical instruments to take home and keep. We will sing and dance, explore rhythm and song.
Arts Around Orcas Ages 7-10
With Andrea Cohen
August 6-10; 9:00-1:00 $ 150
Students will take their art skills on the road to some of Orcas Island’s most beautiful and magical natural settings for lessons in plein air arts. We will focus on techniques of drawing and painting. Each day we will also visit a different Orcas artist’s studio to see how they ply their craft.

More about the instructors…
Paul Freedman is the lead teacher in Salmonberry’s intermediate grades classroom. Paul has written and published extensively on the subject of holistic education. He has taught at Salmonberry since its inception. He has offered this woodworking class before in a variety of settings, and is excited to be teaching it here on Orcas island this summer.
Linda Ellsworth is Salmonberry’s early childhood classroom lead teacher. She has 25 years of teaching experience and is a dedicated advocate of child centered education.
Tom Rawson has been a lead teacher at Bellevue’s The Little School for over 20 years. He is also a renowned musician and recording artist. For more information about Tom, please visit www.tomrawson.com.
Nicole Proffitt is an accomplished artist, performer and educator who has widely taught dance, theater and photography. She taught dance and theater classes in Salmonberry’s 2010 summer program.
Amy Lum is Salmonberry’s Enrollment Coordinator. She is also one of the stewards of Lum Farm, home to an array of critters, both feathered and furry.
Andrea Cohen is Salmonberry’s year round arts instructor. She teaches children in the elementary program in a variety of mediums, from drawing and painting to collage and paper mache. Beyond Salmonberry, Andrea has had a long career as an artist, art teacher, and art therapist. She can be found behind the scenes at many Orcas Center productions creating fabulous sets for local theater productions.
