Young Naturalist Camp, ages 6 – 8

There is a long tradition of pairing an interest in nature with reflective journaling. A naturalist’s journal can take many forms, from a primary focus on recording observations through drawing, to detailed studies of animal behavior over time. In this class we will listen to excerpts from a range of nature journals and discuss their value and appeal. Each student will create their own field journal and have opportunities to experiment with different techniques for recording observations of nature.

Over the course of the week students will be guided to create journal entries in a range of settings, from the Salmonberry school grounds to the beach. Our daily schedule will also include open play times outdoors and time to enjoy the company of friends on a leisurely summer day.

Well-developed writing and drawing skills are not required – simply the ability and willingness to record observations in words (from single words in invented spelling to more lengthy narratives) and picture form (from simple forms and images to more detailed studies). The session will wrap up with an opportunity for each participant to bring a parent or other family member to school for a shared experience – a nature observation dialogue that will be the final journal entry of the week.

Camp will take place at Salmonberry School and at a few sites around the village of Eastsound. Further camp specifics will be shared with participants prior to camp.

Masks are required as is adherence to local and state Covid protocols of masks, distancing, and frequent hand washing.

When: Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM, August 9-13 for ages 6-8.

Camp cost is $300
