WE GOT THIS

TOGETHER

Welcome to our midwinter foray into remote Salmonberry School. Our teachers are amazing! The quantity and quality of the behind the scenes work last week was astounding and inspiring. Our parents are amazing! Pivoting on short notice and adjusting work schedules, childcare arrangements, expressing understanding and gratitude and always being there for our children. Our children are AMAZING! Resilient, hopeful and up for any challenge. These two weeks will be hard. Not one person in our school community was hoping this would happen, and yet, somehow, I feel confident, proud, and just a little excited to watch the magic continue to unfold in unexpected ways. TOGETHER, WE GOT THIS!

Week 2

Please make some kind of gross motor and aerobic movement part of your plan this week. Also, taking the time to breathe and engage in some contemplative activities is a nice way to break up your day and re-center. Visit last week’s suggestions by clicking on the “Previous Announcements” bar below.

In addition consider:

Putting on your rain gear and going for a long walk.

Helping your parents out with some yard work (turn the compost; chop kindling; clean up the yard; be of service!)

Building some cairns to adorn your property You won’t believe the art of rock balancing. See THIS, THIS, THIS,and THIS

Trying some art forms using natural materials. Consider Andy Goldsworthy inspirations HERE are a collection of some pieces made entirely with sticks and twigs. Click on the thumbnails to enlarge.

-For fans of “Cody Camp” and Earthways and primitive skills in general. I highly recommend the video series HERE.  This is a guy in northern Australia.  He starts with NOTHING and makes a stone axe, stone chisels etc. He eventually makes a bow, using the stone tools. He builds a hut. A kiln to fire clay tiles for a tiled roof, pots, and all kinds of buildings. The videos have no dialogue, no music. Just the guy working alone with the sounds of his tools and the forest around him. Enchanting! You can start anywhere, but HERE is the video that begins his journey and it is the one that got me hooked.  Enjoy!  And don’t forget to get yourself outside and try to make even one small item entirely by hand without any purchased tools or materials. That, of course, is the point, after all. 🙂
